"I enjoy working with Ian because he always gets "real" sounds. I mean those great natural sounds a lot of engineers find difficult to obtain, come very quickly and easily for Ian. He is a pleasure to work with and is always ready with a suggestion on how to make it sound even better."

            - Peter Frampton

“The Offspring get amazing offers from around the world to broadcast our live shows.  We’ll only agree to a broadcast if we can sound our best, so it is great to know we can always trust Ian Charbonneau to deliver a great mix.“

           - Dexter Holland, The Offspring

“Ian is the consummate professional and has been an absolute pleasure to work with.  We have worked together on numerous occasions and he has always gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the best performance.  His contacts in the realm of audio engineering are virtually unlimited and Ian’s dedication to his work is truly first rate.  He is well-liked by everyone that he works with, especially the artists.  Ian’s even-keeled temperament is a great asset and often serves to calm the mood in tense situations like live nationally televised performances.  I recommend Ian’s work without hesitation and am always satisfied with the quality of his work.”

            - Drew Kaklamanos, Artist Development, Warner Bros. Records

"Ian's recordings are superb and he achieves this without compromising the flow and integrity of the show. From shows as small as Spaceland or as big as Coachella, he gets the best results for any project."

            - KamranV. Founder, Spaceland Recordings / CyKiK
There are certain people whose stories might go untold unless they are forced to speak but a quiet and unassuming nature belies the experience that lies within one of this generation’s truly gifted engineers. Ian’s story is as unique as the remote recording studio he has spent most of his life working in. From his roots in Montreal, Qc, Ian had the good fortune from a very young age to follow his father, founder of legendary Le Mobile remote recording studio. Thus, from an early age, Ian's fascination with capturing music was at the forefront of his upbringing.

As a very young kid, Ian would often run around on stage moving microphones, socializing with musical legends, bringing artists such as Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, or even The Grateful Dead the cassette at the end of their performance, while his father recorded the famed Montreal Jazz Festival and various projects around the U.S. and Canada. For some reason, the fast paced and challenging world of recording music live just “clicked” and from then on it didn’t take long for this passion to translate into helping his father record major projects.

After spending his early years travelling between Montreal and Los Angeles, Ian would eventually make the latter his permanent home in 1998 where he helped manage and engineer at Leeds Rehearsal Facility and working at Le Mobile while simultaneously running his own production company Modern Entertainment for diverse production, recording and mix projects. In 2004, Ian was called upon to for a very special project, fulfilling the life-long dream of terminal cancer patient Sandra James to record, produce and complete her full length album of original material, later taking on an active role as a member of the Board of Director in her non profit music foundation.

Over the years, Ian developed great relationships with artists, record labels, managements and production teams, recording, mixing and consulting on musical TV appearances for several emerging and established artists. He has notably been working with punk rock band The Offspring over the last 10 years to oversee, record and mix live broadcasts at festivals such as: Rock In Rio, Rock Am Ring, Download Festival, Planeta Atlântida, PinkPop and Japan Summer Sonic to name a few. In addition, he has recorded and mixed live broadcasts for the Coachella Music Festival for 15 years and co-engineered the once in a lifetime Desert Trip Music Festival featuring Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Roger Waters and the Rolling Stones in 2016 as well as a live XM radio special from the Grand Ole Opry with the legendary Eagles band in 2017. In 2019, Ian was called upon engineering and mixing live for the Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival Pay Per View special later released as a BluRay DVD package. In 2022, after over 30 years working along side his father, Ian left Le Mobile in order to focus his works on his new company named “The Recording Project”.

With a truly impressive and diverse list of projects under his belt over the last 30+ years, Ian has achieved an extensive amount of expertise, experience, and recognition for his works and sound. This has earned him several RIAA gold and platinum awards as well as recognition from The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Whether it is a small scale or major production, he insists on the utmost quality and constantly strives to bring a better sounding experience and production to all projects.
